Are goat horns safe for dogs? What to know about a very hard chew
Goat horns can be a good chew for a confirmed power chewer with healthy adult teeth, sized so it can't be swallowed, supervised. They are also the hardest thing we sell, and very hard chews are a well-known cause of broken teeth. So: for some dogs, used carefully, yes. For a lot of dogs, no. Puppies, seniors, gulpers and any dog with a dental history should skip the horn.
What is a goat horn chew?
A horn from an Australian goat, cleaned and naturally dried. Horn is mostly keratin, the same material as hooves and fingernails, and a dog wears it down slowly. A single natural material, nothing added. It isn't a "single protein" the way our jerky is; it's not really food. It's an occupation. Three cuts: medium, large, and the butt, the wide end.
Can goat horns crack a dog's teeth?
Yes. Slab fractures of the big upper chewing tooth are a recognised consequence of hard chews, with horns, antlers and bones among the common causes (AVDC). The veterinary dentists' rule of thumb: if you can't dent it with your thumbnail, it can break a tooth. A goat horn fails that test on purpose; that's what makes it last for weeks. A dog that gnaws along the edge puts far less force through a tooth than one that bites down to snap it.
Which dogs suit a goat horn, and how to use one
Adult dogs with healthy teeth and a proven record as serious chewers. Size up: clearly bigger than your dog can fit across the back of the mouth. Give it in twenty-minute sessions, so you're in the room when a piece comes loose. Inspect it each time; a crack, a sharp edge or a loose piece means that horn is finished. A horn barely counts as food, but it sits under the same limit: treats under about 10% of the day's food. For the long-chew habit without the hardness, try the chews and bones range.
Chew safely. Size it so it can't be swallowed whole, supervise, and take it away once it's small. Very hard chews can crack teeth — not for puppies, seniors or dogs with dental issues. Fresh water always. A treat, not a meal.
