Australian made dog treats: what the label can mean, and what we mean

Every Pudel treat is sourced in Australia and made in Australia. The animal was raised on an Australian farm, or for kangaroo harvested from the wild under government-regulated programs, and the cut was dried and packed here, in a HACCP-accredited Australian facility. Both halves of that sentence matter, because on a label they're separate claims.

What does "made in Australia" mean on a dog treat?

Under Australian country-of-origin rules, a product can be called "made in Australia" when the last major step that made it what it is happened here. The raw ingredients can come from anywhere. Not a loophole; just what the words are defined to mean.

"Product of Australia" is the stricter claim: all the significant ingredients came from Australia and all, or virtually all, of the processing happened here. When you see a flag on a bag, the wording next to it is doing the real work.

Which of those does Pudel claim?

Australian made, in those words. Our beef, chicken, duck and goat are sourced from Australian farms, and every cut is prepared in HACCP-accredited Australian facilities, where hazards are controlled at each step and records kept so a batch can be checked later. Our kangaroo is wild-harvested under the state and federal management programs that set quotas and regulate the harvest, and the Australian Government publishes the figures each year. A paper trail, not a slogan.

We don't print "Product of Australia" on a bag. That is the stricter claim, it has a documentary test behind it, and we'd want every supplier declaration in hand before we made it.

Why does origin matter?

Three practical reasons. Traceability: a single cut from a single supplier is easy to trace, and the batch number on every Pudel bag leads back to the facility and the farm. A system you can ask about: Australian pet food manufacturing works to AS 5812, the Australian Standard, with HACCP as a second framework. A short supply chain: farm to drying room to your cupboard, no ocean crossing.

To check any claim, read the exact wording: "from local and imported ingredients" means mixed, and a flag on its own is a question for the manufacturer. Our label guide covers the rest.

The Starter Pack shows a single-protein, one-country treat across a few proteins; the kangaroo range is the most particularly Australian. Either way, keep treats under about 10% of daily food. Origin tells you where a treat came from, not how much of it to feed.
