Protein quality in dog treats: why the source matters

A protein percentage on the front of a bag tells you how much. It doesn't tell you what. Protein quality comes down to two things: which amino acids the protein contains, and how much of it a dog can actually digest and use. Animal tissue scores well on both, which is why the NRC and FEDIAF describe animal proteins as generally highly digestible for dogs.

What does "protein quality" actually mean?

Protein is a chain of amino acids, and dogs need ten of them from food because they can't make those ten themselves. So "quality" has two parts: does it contain what the dog needs, and how much gets through the gut wall rather than passing straight out? A protein can pass the first and fail the second.

Muscle and organ tissue carry the full set of essential amino acids in a form dogs digest efficiently; the NRC and FEDIAF both note that animal-derived proteins are among the more digestible sources for dogs. One honest qualification: very high heat in processing can reduce digestibility. In a treat, a single named animal cut is simply the easiest protein to be sure about.

How do you read the protein source on a label?

Ingredients are listed by weight, so the first word is the biggest part of what's in the bag. A named animal and cut ("beef liver", "kangaroo") is specific; "meat" or "animal protein" is not. If the animal ingredient sits third, behind a flour and a starch, the protein figure on the front is coming from elsewhere too.

Why does a single named cut make it simple?

Because there's nothing to interpret. A beef jerky made from beef muscle is beef muscle, nothing added to the tally. Beef, dairy, chicken, wheat and lamb are the most commonly reported food allergens in dogs (Mueller, Olivry and Prélaud, 2016), and if your vet is investigating a food reaction, a one-word label keeps the conversation short. Every cut across the full range names its animal and its cut for that reason.

Strictly, a dog needs no protein from treats; a complete diet does that job, and treats stay under about 10% of the day's food. Caring about the source isn't about hitting a target. It's knowing what you're feeding.
